Great Detangling Tips

Natural hair is thick, voluptuous, and gorgeous! One of the most beautiful aspects of the natural hair journey is that everyone will have a different experience and different discoveries of what works best for them. Natural hair is beyond fabulous but just like everything else in life there are pros and cons. Detangling hair plays an important part in maintaining a healthy head of hair but it can also be frustrating and overwhelming!

The detangling process may have some of us staring in the mirror and pondering ‘HOW DO I TAME THIS BEAST?’

Don’t fret. Here are a few tips to help with the detangling process:

  • Use the right tools – It’s best to finger comb or use a wide tooth comb to detangle hair. Don’t use a rat tail comb!
  • Detangle on wet or damp hair (if not soaking wet add a few spritz of water) dry hair is more prone to breakage.
  • SECTIONS- When detangling, divide hair into sections (4, 6, or 8 sections). Tackling one section at a time makes the process a bit easier and not so overwhelming.
  • BOTTOMS UP- Begin detangling from the ends of the hair and work upward to the root. Beginning from the root or the scalp can cause more hair breakage.
  • Find an awesome detangler! Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner & Jane Carter’s Revitalizing Leave In Conditioner are two great choices! detangling blues
  • Most importantly, don’t detangle hair on a day when you’re simply not up to it.  One can do the most damage by rushing and ripping away at hair. Be gentle & remember hair is delicate so it should be treated as such.

Applying all of these tips should help reduce the Detangling Blues. Are there any additional steps that you take when detangling hair that make the process easier? Feel free to share below!
